2 California prison employees arrested for sex crimes against children, officials say

Two correctional officers were arrested on charges of sex crimes against children, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. (Video above: Top Headlines for November 23) The officers worked in different prisons. It is unclear if the two arrests were linked. Matthew James Leavens, 36, was an officer at California State Prison in Sacramento. Leavens was arrested Monday and sent to Sacramento County’s main jail, CDCR said. In a statement, officials said Leavens began working at the prison in 2013. He is charged with six counts of sex crimes against children, including rape, according to the Sacramento County Attorney’s Office. Leavens has since resigned. He is expected to appear in court at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Folsom State Penitentiary Correctional Officer Matthew Robert Solem, 43, was arrested Nov. 18 and sent to Sacramento Main Penitentiary. He faces 14 counts of child sex crimes, according to prosecutors. Solem has worked for CDCR since 2006. He began working at Folsom State Prison in 2007 and was promoted to coroner’s lieutenant in 2018, officials said. Solem is on administrative leave.
