The North Carolina Tar Heels led 17-0 at home against a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket team that is unlikely to make a bowl game. North Carolina had not lost a game in ACC play that season. A very successful year came close to another win, taking the Tar Heels to a 10-1 lead for the season. What was great about this season for UNC was that the Tar Heels didn’t downplay their competition like they usually do. The Tar Heels had racked up a string of factual victories and displayed a level of maturity that was lacking in 2021 when they failed to win the ACC Coastal Division Championship and was one of the biggest disappointments of the season. This year’s team was generally the opposite. It has grown to the situation instead of shrinking. It gained composure and balance late in tight games. This new Carolina identity put the Heels on track to meet Clemson in a battle of teams with a loss in December’s ACC Championship game.
Then everything took a shocking turn.
The Tar Heels were shut out in the second half. Quarterback Drake Maye was noticeably inconsistent. Star receiver Josh Downs dropped a fourth-down pass at Georgia Tech’s 1-yard line in the last five minutes. For some strange reason, he started spinning upwards as if trying to run more yards when the ball arrived. Because of that upfield rotation, he took his eyes off the ball and dropped it. North Carolina lost 21-17, taking some of the excitement out of the ACC title game against Clemson. The Tar Heels looked a lot more like the 2021 team last week, which is a departure from how most of this season has played out.
The state of North Carolina had to accept a bitter defeat in Louisville. The Wolfpack are without star quarterback Devin Leary, who sustained a season-ending injury a few weeks ago. NC State’s offense wasn’t able to make up for Leary’s absence, which is understandable. The Wolfpack won’t be going to a big bowl game, but they can at least win their big domestic rivalry. We’ll see what coach Dave Doeren has in store for the Tar Heels.

Why the NC state could cover the spread
The Tar Heels returned to their 2021 form late in the season, a sign that they are feeling the pressure of being touted and hyped. North Carolina played sloppy, nervous football against Georgia Tech. Drake Maye’s Heisman Trophy chances were ruined. This team is limping towards the finish line. North Carolina State can win the game with their defense.

Why North Carolina could cover the spread
Drake Maye and Josh Downs both missed out against Georgia Tech last week. They are both very talented players who will bounce back and take it upon themselves to fix what went wrong in week 12. You will respond perfectly by week 13.
Final prediction and selection for the state of NC-North Carolina
Drake Maye may have lost his fastball, but other than that, these games are usually tight. North Carolina could win but NC State will cover.
